Shawe Memorial Boys Basketball Coach Sherron Wilkerson announced his resignation on Monday, April 15th after just one season with the 1A school.
Wilkerson was 4-19 in the 2018-2019 season with the program including a win over Medora in their sectional opener.
Wilkerson was hired less than a month after former head coach Mike Brown also resigned after one season to take the head coaching position at Salem High School.
In this video, we interview him about his methods and expectations before the school year began in July of 2018:
“We are saddened to see Coach Wilkerson leave our program. It was a pleasure to get to know Coach Wilkerson on both a personal and professional level. We are now focused to find someone to come in and take over what Coach Wilkerson started with this team. Our administration is dedicated to finding the right person to lead these student athletes and to be a leader for not just Shawe basketball, but Shawe High School as a whole. He brought a lot of basketball experience and knowledge that we hope will carry on through these student athletes and all student athletes who will come up through the Shawe Boys basketball program in the future” the school said in a news release.
Although Wilkerson, a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 1993 Silver Anniversary Team, did not teach at Shawe, he does work for Vehicle Service Group in Madison as an account executive for Environmental Management Solutions.
While Brown was a veteran head coach when he arrived at Shawe, Wilkerson was known more for his background as a standout player who was continuing his love for the sport by moving into coaching.
Wilkerson took over a Shawe team that was 5-20 in one season under Brown, 5-42 in two seasons under Phil Kahn and 26-63 in four seasons under Matt Traylor.
Shawe’s last winning season was 20-4 under former coach Jerry Bomholt — now at Class 2A Southwestern — that included a run to the regional finals.
Bomholt went on to have a wildly successful time coaching the Rebels to two Sectional championships in the last two years.
If you or someone you know would like to apply to be Shawe’s next coach, resumes can be sent to Shawe Athletic Director Stephen Sims at [email protected].
