750 Pounds Dropped in Jefferson County Weight Loss Challenge

The Results are in!

The Healthy Communities Initiative of Jefferson County held their 2nd annual Free “Lighten Up Jefferson County” weight loss challenge.  This challenge was designed for everyone within the county over the age of 16. The eight-week challenge began the week of February 25th and ended the week of April 15th.

According to the Healthy Communities Initiative of Jefferson County, over the 8 week course there were 221 total participants that participated in the 2019 event. (compared to 126 participants in 2018) Of the 221 participants, 91 people completed the contest by weighing out. Thirty-three people out of the 91 who completed the contest lost at least five percent of his/her body weight, which was the contest goal. There was a total of 749.9 pounds were lost with this years challenge, which is almost double from the 391lbs lost in 2018.

The official contest winners are the top three individuals who lost the highest percentage of body weight. The winners are:

1st place (winner of $200) – Jeff Studebaker, who lost an impressive 17.34% of his body weight.

2nd place (winner of $100) – Michael Gasaway, 13.65%

3rd place (winner of $50) – David Huling, 12.31%

Additionally, the thirty-three people who lost five percent of their body weight were placed into a drawing for three door prizes.  Those winners are:

  • Shelly Murphy – $25 Dattilo’s Fruit Co. gift certificate
  • Brent Wehner – $75 Fizz’z Bike Shop gift certificate
  • Jessica Ehrnreiter – 2019 season pass to Clifty Falls State Park (good for any Indiana state park)

 Prizes were made possible by a grant from Managed Health Services.

In addition to the participants, supporters included Grote Industries, King’s Daughters’ Health, Ivy Tech, and Madison Precision Products for meeting contest criteria and agreeing to serve as a weigh-in location for employees and to the City of Madison for use of Brown Gymnasium and Fit for the King Fitness Center which served as community weigh-in locations.

Heather Foy, co-chair of the Healthy Lifestyles team noted, “It was a blessing to give so many high-fives and congratulations to many of the participants when they stepped on the scale; we are excited about your hard work and weight loss success!”

This weight loss event was funded by the King’s Daughters’ Hospital Foundation and with resource support from King’s Daughters’ Health and the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County, the Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) of Jefferson County focuses on bringing community members together to address the major health needs of the community: healthy lifestyles, substance abuse, and mental health.
