Number 1 Out of 6,000 Prevention Programs Analyzed for Long-Term Effects on Substance Use and Misuse

Purdue Extension-Jefferson County is offering the Strengthening Families for Parents and Youth 10-14 Program that focuses on family skills taught in group sessions to increase family strengths, build on improving family relationships, parenting skills and improving youth’s social and life skills. The World Health Organization named this Strengthening Families Program the Number 1 prevention program out of 6,000 programs analyzed for long-term effects on substance use and misuse.

This evidence-based curriculum prevents teen substance abuse and other behavior problems, strengthens parent/youth communication skills, increases academic success in youth, and prevents violence and aggressive behavior at home and school. Strengthening Families for Parents and Youth 10-14 Program will begin on Tuesday, April 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ivy Tech Community College of Madison and will continue every Tuesday until graduation on May 17. The program is offered free of charge and child care will be provided for children younger than 10 years of age.

The program is developed for parents and youth ages 10-14 and is designed for a group of seven to ten families. The program consists of seven two-hour sessions with graduation and is led by three certified facilitators with separate sessions for youth and parents for one hour and then families together for the second hour. Those families interested in the program should call the Purdue Extension-Jefferson County office at 812-265-8919. Pre-registration is necessary and the deadline for registration is April 1st.

There is a limit on the number of families that can participate, since the program is designed for a group of seven to ten families. Any families that sign up after the program is full will be put on a waiting list for future programs offered.Iowa State University developed the program originally and as of today the program is used in all 50 state and more than 18 countries.
