Kathleen Cox
Kathleen “Kitty” Wright Cox, 96, of Hanover, Indiana and formerly of Madison, Indiana, died Saturday, May 16, 2020, at the Davis Elderly Care Home in Hanover.
She was born July 16, 1923, in Cleveland, to Charles F. and Elvira J. Schmidt Wright. She was a 1941 graduate of Norwalk High School, earned her bachelor’s degree from Hanover College in 1947 and did some graduate work at Ohio State University. She lived in Whiting, Indiana, from 1952-1956; then Melrose Park, Illinois, from 1957-1961; and Palos Park, Illinois from 1962-1967 before moving to the Madison community. She retired in 1988 as a case worker for the Jefferson County Welfare Department after 15 years of service. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, John Charles Cox of Indianapolis and Thomas Richard Cox of Panama City, Florida; her grandchildren, Jason Cox of Tallahassee, Florida and Nicholas Cox of Arlington, Virginia; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Raymond Cox, on Sept. 17, 2009; and the father of her sons, Charles Richard “Dick” Cox, whom she had married May 17, 1952, on May 10, 2013.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Madison. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.

Mary Mannix
Mary Lee “Mimi” Giddings Mannix, 83, of Hanover, Indiana and formerly of Madison, Indiana, died Friday, May 15, 2020, at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.
She was born Oct. 13, 1936, in Fullerton, California, to David and Doris Remole Giddings. She was raised in Winter Haven, Florida, and graduated high school there in 1954. She was a piano teacher for many years and served as a caregiver for her granddaughter, Emily. A professional pianist, she loved classical music. She owned and operated Mannix Antiques, Curios and Collectibles in Cincinnati and Metamora, Indiana, from 1973-1983, and moved to Madison in 1999 where she became involved in the community as a volunteer for Casa Amiga and for the North United Methodist Church Youth Group. She was proud to own “Mr. Pig” and display him about the community and never met a stranger.
She is survived by her children, Mark Mannix of Orlando, Florida, David Mannix of Batesville, Indiana, Tracy Geglein of Madison and Larry Mannix II of Madison; her sister, Virginia Kerst of Covington, Kentucky; and eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years, Larry Mannix, on April 9, 1998; her companion, Fred Wright; and her brothers, Steven Giddings and Wayne Giddings.
Memorial services will be announced and conducted at a later date at the First Christian Church in downtown Madison. Interment will be private in the Mitchell Cemetery in Mitchell, Indiana.

Larry Ward
Larry G. Ward, 76, of Madison, Indiana, died Friday, May 15, 2020, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
He was born Oct. 23, 1943, in Bethlehem, Kentucky, to Vernon and Hettie James Ward. He was raised in Eminence, Kentucky, and graduated school there. He worked early in life as a general manager for McDonald’s Restaurants in Shively, Kentucky. He retired from AAFES and worked as a general manager setting up Burger King Restaurants in Germany, North Dakota and other areas. He was raised in the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing, watching sports, especially UK, and being with his family.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Lynn Harville of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; a son, Richard “Buddy” G. Ward of Smyrna, Tennessee; three stepsons, Michael W. Jensen of Ormond Beach, Florida, Richard Thomas “Rick’ Jensen of Radcliff, Kentucky and Rory Scott Jensen of Madison; two sisters, Judy Neal and Faye Courtney, both of New Castle, Indiana; and four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by parents; his wife of 11 years, Janet Irene Skaggs Ward, on May 3, 2007 and his first wife, Patty Wilson Ward, on Sept. 11, 2014.
Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2020, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Springdale Cemetery in downtown Madison. Friends may visit Monday from 3 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.

Bob Willis
Bob Willis, 70, of Madison, Indiana, died Saturday, May 16, 2020, at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
He was born Nov. 20, 1949, in Pineville, Kentucky, to Artis and Kathleen Napier Willis. He was raised in Pineville and moved to Jefferson County in junior high school. He retired after 20 years of service with the Jefferson County Highway Department as a road grader operator. He also enjoyed farming and had worked as an over the road truck driver. He was a member of the Manville Christian Church and liked being on his farm, working in the garden, coon hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kandra S. Moore Willis, of Madison; his sons, Robbie Willis of Madison, Michael Willis of Scottsburg, Indiana, Jeremy Willis of Madison, and Brian Willis of La Grange, Kentucky and seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Arleen Willis.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Friends may visit from 4 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home with COVID-19 crowd restrictions observed. Cremation was chosen.

Debra Day
Debra Sue Day, 65, of North Vernon, died Saturday, May 16, 2020, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus.
She was born Nov. 10, 1954, in Seymour, to Robert L. and Jane Morgan Day. She was a 1974 graduate of Jennings County High School and attended I.U.P.U.I. in Indianapolis. She was a captain at Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in Madison, retiring in 2015 after six years. She had previously worked for the Madison Correctional Facility for women in Madison for two years and as a supervisor for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville for 29 years. She was the president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees at Muscatatuck State Developmental Center for 10 years. She enjoyed reading, mowing grass, spending time with her family and taking care of others.
Survivors include her brothers, Robert D. Day of North Vernon and Ronnie Day of Madison; a sister, Tammy Adams of North Vernon and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Robert Wesley Day.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines, only 25 people will be allowed in the funeral home at a time.

Shirley Liter
Shirley Jean Higbie Liter, 82, of Milton, Kentucky, died Sunday, May 17, 2020, at the Baptist Health Hospital in Louisville.
She was born May 22, 1937, in Ripley County, Indiana, to Major and Thelma Heath Higbie. She was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1955 graduate of Madison High School. She settled in Milton after marrying and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Mt. Byrd Christian Church in Milton where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She worked early in life for Inglis Drug Store in downtown Madison and the old Indiana Telephone Company. She also enjoyed selling Avon to her family, neighbors and friends and retired after 23 years of service as a school bus driver for the Trimble County School System. She enjoyed cross word puzzles, cooking new things for her family, gardening and working in her flowers.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Leroy Wayne Liter, of Milton; her daughters, Kellie Dean of Milton and Toni Liter of Madison; her son, Bradley Liter of Milton; her brother, Kenneth Higbie of Madison; her sister, Carolyn Hostetler of Madison; her grandson, Cody Dean; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Mt. Byrd Christian Church in Milton. Interment will follow in the Moffett Cemetery in Milton. Friends may visit from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, and from noon until the time of service Thursday at the church.

William Kasper
William J. “Bill” Kasper, 64, of Madison, Indiana, died Monday, May 18, 2020, at Baptist Health-Floyd in New Albany, Indiana.
He was born June 30, 1955, in Madison to William and Doris Mae Ricketts Kasper. He was raised in Madison and graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1973. He retired after 42 years of service from IKEC where he was a maintenance mechanic. He was an avid sports fan of the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees and Indiana Hoosiers and driver Jeff Gordon in auto racing. He was a big fan of the Madison Regatta and going to watch Louisville Bats baseball with his son. He was raised in the Catholic church and loved his dog and his cats.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 30 years, Louann B. Stockdale Kasper of Madison; a son, Brent Alexander Kasper of Madison; a brother, Bernie Kasper of Madison; his sisters, Margaret Short of Henryville, Linda Mitcheltree of Peidmont, South Carolina, Karen Lykins of Sadieville, Kentucky, Mary Ann Eubank of Clarksville, Indiana; two half-sisters, Pauline Taylor of Savannah, Georgia and Mary Ann Eubank of Clarksville, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his half sister, Jean Opal Davin.

India Cooper
India C. Cooper, 67, of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, May 17, 2020, at her home.
She was born July 24, 1952, in Jackson, Mississippi, to G. Ray and Jean Rogers Cooper. She grew up in the Denver area and earned a bachelor of arts in English literature and a master’s degree in theatre from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She pursued doctoral studies in theatre history and criticism at Northwestern University. As a writer, actor and director, she worked for many years with companies including The Commons Theatre in Chicago and Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York, among others. She was also a freelance copy editor and an avid trivia fan and competitor. She appeared several times on the game show Jeopardy!, first as a five-time champion and then in several invitational tournaments including the Million Dollar Masters and the Battle of the Decades.
Survivors include a sister, Nancy Cooper of Eugene, Oregon; a brother Walt Cooper, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a niece, two stepsons and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Fred Burrell.
Cremation was chosen and her remains will be placed alongside her husband’s in the columbarium at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City where they were married.
Arrangements for memorial services in Madison and New York City will be made at a later date.

She was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Carrollton, to Henry and Ollie Elizabeth Smith Garrett. She was a housewife, mother of three daughters and a member of the English Baptist Church who enjoyed quilting in her spare time.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Riddle of Bedford, Kentucky, Nancy Hoard of Pendleton, Kentucky and Bonnie Smith of Bedford; a sister, Hazel Fox of Bedford; two brothers, Raymond Garrett of Carrollton and Ross Garrett of Mulberry, Florida; and 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey Ford, on Aug. 13, 2011; a sister, June Sutherland; three brothers, Russell, Richard and Earl Garrett; and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral Services will be private but broadcast on Facebook LIVE on the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home Facebook Page at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 22. Interment will be in the English Cemetery near Carrollton. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday at the funeral home.

Harold Garland Jr.
Harold Wayne Garland Jr., 74, of Vevay, Indiana, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.
He was born Dec. 21, 1945, in Akron, Ohio, to Harold Wayne Garland Sr. and Gladys Collins Garland. He was raised in Columbus, Indiana, and was a 1965 graduate of Columbus High School. He attended Black Hills of South Dakota to become a chef and was employed by the Lebanon Country Club Golf Course, Ponderosa and Phillips 66 in Lebanon, Indiana. He was also a chef for Sheraton Hotel in Huntington, California, for five years and employed as a groundskeeper for Lebanon Parks and Recreation for several years. He had resided in the Tupelo, Mississippi, community for 16 years until moving to the Vevay community, was a former member of the Moose Family Center Lodge 1269 in Lebanon and the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Columbus. He enjoyed bowling, watching sports, gardening and mowing.
Survivors include his daughter, Natasha Lynn May of Madison; his sons, Harold Wayne Garland III of Seymour, Jeremy Scott Garland of Morgantown, Indiana and Brad Garland of North Vernon, Indiana; and 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jo Carlton West-Smith-Garland; his grandson, Colton Garland; and his brothers, Ronnie and Michael Garland.

Wilma Cole
Wilma L. Works Cole, 89, of Vevay, Indiana and formerly of Fairview, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 17, 1930, in Allensville, Indiana, to Jesse Floyd and Carrie Augusta Slack Works. She was raised in Allensville and was a 1949 graduate of Vevay High School. After graduation, she was employed for the US Shoe Factory in Vevay for one year. She married and was a former cook for the Switzerland County Elementary School in East Enterprise, Indiana, retiring in 2006 after 20 years of service. During the summer months she cooked for Camp Livingston in Bennington, Indiana, and for Ogle Haus in Vevay. She was a member of the Allensville United Methodist Church and attended Fairview United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mitzi Higgins of Fairview; a son, Mike Cole of Vevay; her brothers, Dale Works of Rising Sun, Indiana and Tommie Works of Allensville; a sister, Betty Mulvany of Brookville, Indiana; and three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and her numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Wilfred Lawrence Cole, 2009; her brothers, Gerald Nolan Works, Edwin Loren Works, Warren D. Works and Donald Leroy Works; a sister, Lois A. Works Wells; and a granddaughter.

Katie Lawson
Mary Katherine “Katie” Smith Lawson, 90, of Madison, Indiana, died Saturday, May 23, 2020, at the Hickory Creek of Madison.
She was born April 17, 1930, in Louisville, to Clyde James and Mary Estelle McCroskey Smith. She was a 1948 midterm graduate of Louisville Shawnee High School and went to work as a bookkeeper in the accounts payable department at Central School Supply Company in Louisville for several years. She married in 1953 and settled in Madison, working at the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, King’s Daughters’ Hospital as a surgery secretary and the Jefferson Community Federal Credit Union. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church including the choir since 1955 where she would often sing solos. She was financial secretary and treasurer of the church and treasurer of the women’s organization at Trinity United Methodist. She was an active associate member of Tri Kappa, the Republican Women’s Club and a board member of the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Lawson of Madison; her sons, Michael Lawson of Hanover, Indiana, and Gerald “Joe” Lawson of Delray Beach, Florida; and three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 24 years, Glenn Harry Lawson, on April 15, 1978; and her brothers, Claude Thomas Smith and Carroll Smith.
Private family graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens there. Private family visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison.

Betty Risden
Betty June Hennebert Risden, 93, of Greenwood, Indiana and formerly of Madison and Columbus, Indiana, died Thursday, May 21, 2020, at the Aspen Trace in Greenwood, Indiana.
She was born June 26, 1926, on the family farm in Jefferson County, Ohio, to Frank and Gladys Hartzell Hennebert. She was a 1944 graduate of Brilliant High School in Jefferson County, Ohio. She earned an associate degree in business school and took classes at both Purdue and Indiana Universities. She married and moved to Madison, Indiana, in 1953 and worked for Madison Consolidated School Corporation at Lydia Middleton Elementary in downtown Madison, at the old junior high in downtown Madison and at the high school. She had worked in the computer lab and was a secretary to the principal, Mark Butler, for many years. She was a member of the North United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing cards with the bridge club. She moved to Columbus, Indiana, in 1999 to be near her daughter.
Survivors incude her daughters, Teresa “Terri” Pruett of San Antonio, Debra S. Thomas of Columbus, Barbara “Barb” Starr of Cincinnati, Patricia “Patty” Neuerman of Greenfield, Indiana; and seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years, Robert Leonard Risden, in 2000; and her brother, Gordon Hennebert.
Private family services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will be private in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Private family visitation is 11 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will hold a public celebration of life from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at the funeral home for all of her friends and family to attend.
