Mary Downing

Mary Louise Peelman Downing, 81, of Vevay, Indiana, died Friday, April 24, 2020, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

She was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Vevay, as one of 11 children to Frank Edward “E.P.” and Mary Naomi Fulton Peelman. She was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1957 graduate of Vevay High School. She was employed by US Shoe Factory in Vevay and the Steer Restaurant in Madison, Indiana for several years. She was also employed by the Madison State Hospital in Madison for several years, was a member of the Vevay Church of Christ in Vevay and enjoyed babysitting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Coy, Peggy L. Scudder and Jacqueline Chatham, all of Vevay and Tammy S. Walton of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; her sons, Ray Otter of Versailles, Indiana and Micah Downing of Bloomington, Indiana; her stepdaughters, Linda Joy Furnish and LaDona Jean Scudder; her stepsons, Roy Downing Jr. and Ronald J. Downing; her brothers, Gordan Peelman of Lawrenceburg and Ronnie Peelman of Maysville, South Carolina; and 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Raymond Otter and her second husband, Roy Francis Downing; her sisters, Virginia Peelman, Betty Tomlison, Roberta Kearney, Linda Carol Peters and Shirley Ann Marsh; her brothers, Eugene, Robert “Bobby” and Charles “Chuck” Peelman and a niece.

Due to COVID-19 crowd restrictions, private funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2020, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Private family visitation is 10 a.m. Monday until time of services. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery there.

Mildred Barker

Mildred C. Barker, 96, of Madison, Indiana, died Saturday, April 25, 2020, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany, Indiana.

She was born March 12, 1924, in Bedford, Kentucky, to John and Myrtle Mikesell Luellen. She was head housekeeper at Hanover College for many years and worked at Hanover Nursing Center for 15 years prior to that. She was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting, going to church and her grandchildren.

She is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd Barker; and her sons, Wayne Bell and Rick Bell.

Private graveside services will be held at Springdale Cemetery in Madison.

“Sue Ann” Essex

Schaene “Sue Ann” Bromwell Essex, 64, of Dillsboro, Indiana, died Saturday, March 7, 2020, from injuries she sustained from an automobile accident in Dillsboro.

She was born November 29, 1955, in Madison, Indiana, to Bradley Bromwell and Mildred L. “Minnie” Smith Ackerman-Bromwell. She was raised in Richmond, Indiana, and graduated high school there. She was employed for the US Shoe Factory in Vevay, Indiana, for a few months and enjoyed spending time with her dogs and cats.

Survivors include her half-sisters, Cathy Susan Ackerman Hart of Vevay, Indiana, and Ann Bromwell of Columbus, Indiana; a stepbrother, Patrick Collier of Vevay; and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Gretta Lee Pratt Bromwell; a half-brother, John “Terry” Ackerman; and her stepsister, Lee Ann Moore.

Private family graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, May 4, in the Vevay Cemetery there.

Kathryn Stewart

Kathryn Blanche Hulse Stewart, 91, died Friday, April 24, 2020, at Dublin Assisted Living and Memory Support in Dublin, Ohio. She had suffered from dementia for several years.

She was born Feb. 26, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Edgar and Hazel Westerman Hulse. She earned a bachelor of arts in education at Bowling Green University in Ohio where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She married and raised three children before starting her teaching career as a kindergarten and preschool teacher. She later received her master’s degree in education from Indiana University in June 1971. Her role as a teacher included developing and supervising craft projects for her students, and her natural skills led her to pursue crafts on her own. She had a talent for sewing, enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. After retiring, she and her husband traveled the country in their Avion trailer, and would take their grandchildren with them from coast to coast. She had lived in the Madison, Indiana, community in the 1970s when she was a teacher here and her husband worked at Reliant Electric.

Survived include her husband of 69 years Claire McKay Stewart Jr.; two sons, Claire Stewart III and James Stewart; a sister, Marjory Megla; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Sara Kathryn Stewart Votroubek.

A private funeral service was totay, at Royal-Coleman Funeral Home in Linesville, Pennsylvania with burial in Linesville Cemetery there.

Richard Ballard

Richard Edward “Dick” Ballard, 94, of Indianapolis, died Sunday, April 26, 2020, at Westminster Village North in Indianapolis.

He was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Indianapolis, to William Matthew Ballard Sr. and Helen Beatrice Kornbroke Ballard. He was raised in Marion, Indiana, and was a 1943 graduate of Marion Senior High School. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, for one year, and was inducted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 17, 1945, in Indianapolis, rising to the rank of private. He served in company D1560th SCU Reception Center at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was in the 8th Photo Tech SQDN 40th Bomb WG in Oxford, England, and rose to the rank of corporal. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Germany. He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1947, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He served in the United States Army Air Force Reserves and was honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1950. He was employed as a designer for Thomson Consumer Electronics RCA in Indianapolis, retiring in 1989 after 17 years of service. He was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and enjoyed woodworking, camping with his family and was an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Hazel Eileen Moreillon Ballard of Indianapolis; a son, Jeffrey Ballard of Indianapolis; his daughters, Lynn Holliday of Indianapolis and Marsha Branson of Noblesville, Indiana; and nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Matthew Ballard Jr., in December 2012.

Due to the COVID-19 emergency, private entombment services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 30, in the Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Howard Stites

Howard I. Stites, 86, of Austin, Indiana and formerly of Deputy, Indiana, died Sunday, March 15, 2020, at his home in Austin.

He was born Oct. 26, 1933, on the family farm in Deputy, to Olin Deputy Stites and Mary Augusta Burnside Stites. He was raised in Deputy and was a 1951 graduate of Deputy High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1955 during the Korean War Era and was honorably discharged in 1966. He farmed until he retired in 1988. He had also worked for Delco Remy in Anderson, Indiana, and lived in Hancock County for six years. He had worked as a certified mechanic for two Massey Ferguson dealerships and a Case dealership. He had lived in Austin since 1988 and had worked for Stacy’s Excavating and Paving in Scottsburg, Indiana. He was a member of the Solid Rock Community Church and enjoyed fishing and collecting antique clocks.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Dale Jean Collings Stites of Austin; a daughter, S. Joann Clark of Plant City, Florida; his sons, Roger Stites of Lexington, Indiana and Glen Stites of Falmouth, Kentucky; his sister, Thelma Wire of Phoenix; and nine grandchilden, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Ernest Lamont Nay, in May 1978; his sister, Virginia Irene Stites Corya, in February 2018; and his brother, Gus Ulysses Stites, in December 2009.

He donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine and his ashes will be scattered.

Marcella Youngblood

Marcella Youngblood, 74, of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, April 26, 2020, at the Hosparus Inpatient Unit of Norton Pavilion in Louisville.

She was born April 21, 1946, in Madison, to Allen Samuel and Maddeline Cull Youngblood. She lived all of her life in Madison and attended school there. She loved music, singing, reading, cooking and being with her family and loved going to the American Legion and singing Karaoke. She was a member of the River Valley Community Church. She married James Campbell in 1962 and they had three children. She was a cashier for for River City for several years and later married her companion of several years, John B. Park, in March 1980.

Survivors include her sons, James Christopher Campbell and Aaron Patrick Campbell, both of Madison; her daughter, Carolyn Yvette Campbell Smith of Madison; her sisters, Carolyn Youngblood Dailey, Pauline Youngblood Young and Maddeline Youngblood Purvis, all of Madison, Indiana; and two granddaughters, a great granddaughter and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Betty Jean Young and Alene June Youngblood; her brothers, Robert Allen Youngblood, George A. Youngblood, Hermon E. Youngblood and Donald M. “Duck” Youngblood; and her second husband, John B. Park, in September 1980.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 1, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Private family interment will follow in the Fairmount Cemetery in Madison. Friends may visit from 2 p.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home with COVID-19 crowd restrictions observed.

Jean Johann

Jean Clower Johann, 84, of Madison, Indiana, died Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison.

She was born Oct. 26, 1935, in Fort Monroe, Virginia, to Lovick Pierce Clower and Ruth Cowan Clower Key. Her father served in the military so as a child she lived in Schwabisch Hall, Nuremberg and Heidelberg in Germany, Windsor, North Carolina and Sandusky, Ohio. Her family moved to the Madison area when she was a junior in high school and she was a 1953 graduate of Madison High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball, baton twirling, marching in parades and going to rifle shooting matches. She earned her registered nurse degree from Indiana University Southeast in 1972, was co-owner, co-operator and general manager of Madison Distributing Company with her husband from 1960-1999. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and was active in the local Red Cross where she was president for several years. She had served as chairman of the Madison Regatta Balloon Race, loved dancing, enjoyed the gang at Mike’s Grill, socializing with friends, playing cards, going to her kids and grandkids ball games, reading and watching IU and Butler basketball.

Survivorsinclude her sons, Charles William Johann, Michael Andrew Johann and Randal Wayne Johann, all of Madison; and seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces, great nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Earl William “Bill” Johann, on Dec. 19, 2013; and a brother, Mike Clower.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2020, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will be private at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Patrick Cemetery in Madison. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until time of services Monday. The Rosary will be prayed at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Tammy Rousch

Tammy F. Hadley Rousch, 58, of Columbus, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Auburn Village in Auburn, Indiana.

She was born June 14, 1961, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to James and Barbara Holmes Hadley. She was raised in Indiana and graduated from Shelbyville High School. She lived most of her life in Columbus and was a homemaker, wife, mom and grandma. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, watching NASCAR — driver Jeff Gordon was her favorite — and loved hummingbirds and going to flea markets. She attended Green Road Baptist Church.

Survivors included her husband of 19 years, Ronald W. Rousch of Columbus; her daughter, Brandy Thixton of Columbus; her stepdaughter, Lisa Hess of North Vernon, Indiana; and seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a stepbrother, Greg Duvall.

Paul Theiring

Paul Eugene “P.T.” Theiring, 87, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Meadow View Health and Rehab in Salem, Indiana.

He was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Spurgeon, Indiana, to Orville and Agnes Julkenbeck Theiring. He was raised in Spurgeon and graduated from Spurgeon High School. He was raised in the Spurgeon United Methodist Church, received his bachelors degree from Oakland College and his masters from Indiana State. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 27, 1951, in Indianapolis. He served during the Korean War and rose to the rate of sergeant serving in the Head Quarters Battery 115th FA Battalion. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1954, from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, receiving the Korean Service Medal with three bronze battle stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After military service he taught in high schools at Booneville, Ottwell and Vevay form 1957-1964. He worked in construction and carpentry during the summers and helped build the locks and dams. His family settled in Madison in 1968 and he was employed with the Jefferson Proving Ground from Aug. 7, 1964 to April 3, 1993. For a time he held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and the HADI Shrine. He was also a member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion, the Madison VFW Post 1969 and the Korean War Veterans Association. He enjoyed participating in the Honor Flight in 2016. He enjoyed his farm, playing golf, woodworking, loved to work with barn wood, play chess, hunt, fish, play Solitaire and listen to Blue Grass music and Classical music. He enjoyed flying his plane and was proud to hold his pilot’s license.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Shelby Jean Willis Theiring of Madison; his sons, David Theiring and Brian Theiring, both of Madison; his daughters, Myra Theiring and Jennifer Theiring Nay, both of Madison; his brothers, Kenneth Theiring of Evansville, Indiana and Robert Theiring of Little Rock, Arkansas; his half brothers, James Thorne of Oakland City, Indiana and Tom Thorne and Ronnie Thorne, both of Winslow, Indiana; and five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Jay Thorne; his sister, Ruth Pollard; his half sister, Marjorie Riester; and his brother, Calvin Theiring.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.

Friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home.

A final salute will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with full military honors to follow by Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.

Doris Reed

Doris Reed, 72, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

She was born April 15, 1948, in Madison, to Frederick R. and Lucy Mildred Holt Overpeck. She had worked at Muscatatuck State Hospital for 10 years and in laundry at the Waters of Clifty Falls for four years. She was a caregiver to her daughter for 26 years until her death, a member of the Faith Covenant Church and enjoyed reading, working and taking care of her family.

Survivors include her fiancée, Glen Bushong of Madison; her daughters, Amy Johnson and Paula Marksberry, both of Madison; her son, Paul Kevin Reed of Madison; her brother, Rick Overpeck of Harlingen, Texas; and nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years, Paul Ronald Reed, on March 3, 2008; her daughter, Rhonda L. Konkle, in February 2015; her sisters, Linda Carole Simmons Tilley and Marjorie Joanne Ritchie.

Funeral services will be at noon on Saturday, May 2, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Private interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Hebron Cemetery in Madison.

Tammy Rousch

Tammy F. Hadley Rousch, 58, of Columbus, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Auburn Village in Auburn, Indiana.

She was born June 14, 1961, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to James and Barbara Holmes Hadley. She was raised in Indiana and graduated from Shelbyville High School. She lived most of her life in Columbus and was a homemaker, wife, mom and grandma. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, watching NASCAR — driver Jeff Gordon was her favorite — and loved hummingbirds and going to flea markets. She attended Green Road Baptist Church.

Survivors included her husband of 19 years, Ronald W. Rousch of Columbus; her daughter, Brandy Thixton of Columbus; her stepdaughter, Lisa Hess of North Vernon, Indiana; and seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a stepbrother, Greg Duvall.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2020, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre-Hanover Chapel in Hanover, Indiana. Interment will follow in the New Bethel Cemetery in Chelsea, Indiana. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Paul Theiring

Paul Eugene “P.T.” Theiring, 87, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Meadow View Health and Rehab in Salem, Indiana.

He was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Spurgeon, Indiana, to Orville and Agnes Julkenbeck Theiring. He was raised in Spurgeon and graduated from Spurgeon High School. He was raised in the Spurgeon United Methodist Church, received his bachelors degree from Oakland College and his masters from Indiana State. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 27, 1951, in Indianapolis. He served during the Korean War and rose to the rate of sergeant serving in the Head Quarters Battery 115th FA Battalion. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1954, from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, receiving the Korean Service Medal with three bronze battle stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After military service he taught in high schools at Booneville, Ottwell and Vevay form 1957-1964. He worked in construction and carpentry during the summers and helped build the locks and dams. His family settled in Madison in 1968 and he was employed with the Jefferson Proving Ground from Aug. 7, 1964 to April 3, 1993. For a time he held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and the HADI Shrine. He was also a member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion, the Madison VFW Post 1969 and the Korean War Veterans Association. He enjoyed participating in the Honor Flight in 2016. He enjoyed his farm, playing golf, woodworking, loved to work with barn wood, play chess, hunt, fish, play Solitaire and listen to Blue Grass music and Classical music. He enjoyed flying his plane and was proud to hold his pilot’s license.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Shelby Jean Willis Theiring of Madison; his sons, David Theiring and Brian Theiring, both of Madison; his daughters, Myra Theiring and Jennifer Theiring Nay, both of Madison; his brothers, Kenneth Theiring of Evansville, Indiana and Robert Theiring of Little Rock, Arkansas; his half brothers, James Thorne of Oakland City, Indiana and Tom Thorne and Ronnie Thorne, both of Winslow, Indiana; and five grandchildren, six step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, 12 six step great grandchildren, two step great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Jay Thorne; his sister, Ruth Pollard; his half sister, Marjorie Riester; and his brother, Calvin Theiring.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.

Friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home.

A final salute will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with full military honors to follow by Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.
