David Furnish

David Earl Furnish, 62, of Madison, Indiana, died Monday, April 13, 2020, at the IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 24, 1958, in Madison, to Earl Wayne Furnish and Shirley L. Mills Hayden. He was raised in Switzerland and Ripley counties and graduated from South Ripley High School in 1977 where he played basketball and other sports. He was employed with the Indiana Department of Transportation for 40 years at the Versailles Unit where he was a foreman for several years. The past four years he served as a highway tech/inspector for the Seymour District working in the Vevay office. He lived in Versailles from 1980-2010 before moving to Bacon Ridge to live on the family farm. He liked playing church softball in his younger years for St. Anthony Catholic Church, was a long-time member of St. Magdalene Catholic Church and now the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. While living in Versailles he enjoyed coaching area youth as well as the Versailles DeMolay and later at Lide White Boys and Girls Club in Madison. He served on the Versailles Town Board for four years and held membership in the Versailles Masonic Lodge No. 7 F. & A.M. He was the family repairman, loved fishing, hunting and antiques.

Survivors include his father of Vevay; his wife of 40 years, Sherri Lynn Geyman Furnish, of Madison; a son, Bryce Furnish of Madison; a brother, Alan Furnish of Madison; his half sisters, Alicia Byard of Versailles and Debbie Bradley of French Lick, Indiana; and several aunts and uncles, step brothers and step sisters, nieces and nephews and cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his stepfather, Earl Hayden Jr.; his stepmother, Wanda Kennett Furnish; and several other family members.

Private graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the St. Magdalene Cemetery in Madison with interment there. Private family visitation is 11 a.m. Monday until time of services at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic a Celebration of Life Memorial Visitation and Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Canaan Volunteer Fire Department, the Saint Magdalene Catholic Cemetery Trust, the Prince of Peace Steeple for the People Fund or the IU Foundation for families suffering with cancer.
